supplies
First, take your wooden dowel and paint it the color of your choosing.

01
Toward the each end of the dowel, tie an end of your string with a double knot. Trim excess string, and apply a dab of glue to each double knot. (Note: You will be doing this glue step each time you tie a knot.)

For end pieces:

Thin, wooden, pre-cut shapes:

  1. In the middle of your shape, about ¼” from the top, draw a dot
  2. Carefully, with a thin drill bit, drill a hole through each of the wooden shapes

This step could also be replaced with cardboard/ heavy, thick paper and cutting them into shapes. Use a hole punch to create a hole at the top of each shape.

Paint one side of your shapes to your liking. Solid with dots, solid with lines, the options are endless. Let dry.

Cut three lengths of string, roughly 3 feet, allowing amply tying length. Tie a string end to each of your end pieces.

07
Spread your project out on a flat surface. Perpendicular to your dowel, arrange your three vertical strings evenly, with even vertical lengths. Tie the tops of each string to the bar.

Adhering the Prints

5×5 Prints are perfect for this project. Another option that works is the Thumbprint Photo Box which already comes with 4×4 prints, 10 mounted or 50 unmounted.

Pick nine of your favorite Prints.  Lie them out and decide the arrangement you like. To provide ease of measurement, hang your project on the wall. Using small pieces of washi tape, adhere a corner of each print over the strings to further judge the arrangement of prints.

Once you’re pleased with your print placements, one at a time, remove the Print and slide it behind the string, back of the Print facing you, and adhere with a larger piece of washi tape, both vertically and horizontally.

Repeat with each Print, eyeballing the placement, or using a ruler.

Once all your Prints are taped, carefully pull the strings away from the wall, turning each Print to face you.

Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect! Imperfections add character.

Hang in a special place and admire your work.
